Training Skills

  • Delivery of a pre-prepared training session on a subject of the delegate’s choice, relevant to their work.

N.B. The duration of each delegate’s training session depends on the overall course length and the number of participants. Ideally, there should be eight participants.

  • Comprehensive one-to-one and group feedback

Preparing a Training Session

  • Questions for the trainer to consider in advance:
    • Why am I the right person for this?
    • Logistics – what, where, when, how, and how long?
    • Understanding how these answers influence the structure of the training session
  • Structuring the content:
    • Research – gain in-depth knowledge of the subject
    • Organizing the content logically
    • Creating and utilizing complementary visual aids

Preparing the Trainer

  • A trainer’s three fundamental communication tools:
    • Verbal – the words used, avoiding slang and jargon
    • Vocal – the tone of voice, avoiding distracting verbal tics and unnecessary pauses
    • Visual – the presenter’s appearance: attire, mannerisms, and presence
  • Rehearsing the training session – and obtaining honest feedback from a reliable source
  • Managing nervousness

Preparing the Environment

  • Room layouts – and how they convey underlying messages to course attendees
  • Using the space to enhance the training experience
  • And tidying up after the course

Evaluation

  • The importance of evaluation
  • Processes for gathering and utilizing delegate feedback

Training Skills – Revisited

  • Delivery of another training session (after adequate preparation time).

N.B. This can be the same presentation as in Module 1, but revised based on detailed feedback.
